Plan N covers most out-of-pocket costs from Original Medicare, but requires small copays in certain situations: up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that don't result in admission. It also does not cover Part B excess charges. These trade-offs make Plan N significantly more affordable than Plan G in most markets.

What Plan N Covers

  • Part A coinsurance & hospital costs (365 extra days)
  • Part B coinsurance / copayments (except small office/ER copays)
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part A deductible ($1,676 in 2026)
  • Foreign travel emergency (80%)

What Plan N Does Not Cover

  • Part B deductible ($257 in 2026)
  • Part B excess charges
  • Office visit copay - up to $20
  • ER visit copay (non-admission) - up to $50

When to Enroll in Plan N

The best time to enroll in any Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month window begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge more because of your health history.

Outside this window, you may face medical underwriting unless you qualify for a Guaranteed Issue right. Enroll at the right time to lock in the best rates.
